80th Annual Convention success!

A big thank you to everyone who took time to attend the 80^th Annual ACA Convention and Trade Show. It was a huge success with a large crowd of over 800, an active trade show and informative speakers for attendees to enjoy. The crew here at ACA was so proud of our auction on Friday night, which raised over $25,000 for the BEEF PAC! We appreciate all the donors and buyers who helped generate these funds. We also always appreciate Cracker Johnson auctioneering and his team of ring men which were Nathan Lipscomb, Jim Collins, Jason King, Ginger Gaines and Whit Lane this year.

We were thrilled to induct our new officer team into office during the 2023 Annual Membership Meeting, held Saturday at Convention. The 2023 officers are pictured left to right: Erin Beasley of Notasulga, executive vice president; Dr. Terry Slaten of Cullman, president-elect; Chuck Madaris of Hope Hull, president; Keith Glover of Greensboro, vice president; and Richard Meadows of Columbia, treasurer. 

Also during the Annual Membership Meeting of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, a new slate of Regional Vice Presidents were elected to serve a three-year term beginning in 2023. They are L-R: Junior Riner, Colbert County; Jeremy Pearson, Cherokee County; Chet Matthews, Elmore County; and Jack Robertson, Chambers County.

We look forward to working with these leaders in the years to come! The Cattlemen’s Heritage Banquet was also a fun evening of honoring our past and look forward to the future. First, we graduated 26 students of YCLP Class IX. Following, we had the opportunity to induct three deserving individuals into the Alabama Livestock Hall of Fame. They are: Rick Pate, Dr. Randy Huffman and Dr. Ken McMillan. Learn more about all these industry leaders in the April issue of the Alabama Cattleman magazine. Last but certainly not least, we honored outgoing ACA president Jim Jordan for an excellent year of leadership. Jim is truly one-of-a-kind…an outstanding leader, advocate and friend! Thank you, Jim, for a job well done!

One hard thing about having such a close and involved staff is the toll is takes when one of the crew members decides to depart. After nearly five years on our team, Ali (Cantrell) Gotcher will serve her last day with the ACA this coming Tuesday, February 28. She won’t be going far, though, as her new venture will be as an Animal Sciences and Forages Regional Extension Agent (REA) in the northwest corner of Alabama. She will serve in the position that Paul Vining previously held which covered Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Lamar, Winston, Fayette, Marion and Walker counties.

Ali has played an integral role within our association in many capacities, but mostly in the realm of Beef Checkoff education. She has worked tirelessly with retail, foodservice, culinary, FACS, nutritionists, and many others to promote beef education and extend the Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. campaign in Alabama. She is leaving behind big shoes to fill, and while we seek to fill them, we invite you to send any consumer-facing or educational Beef Checkoff questions or requests to Erin Beasley and/or Kayla Greer.

Ali, we tip our hat to you and wish you well in your next chapter! Thanks for all you’ve done for Alabama’s beef cattle industry and our association.

Montgomery County Farm RECEIVES REGIONAL RECOGNITION

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) announced that Carter Cattle Company, LLC, in Pintlala, Alabama, was selected as one of seven regional winners of the 2022 Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP). The farm was recognized during the 2023 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show in New Orleans. Established in 1991, ESAP celebrates outstanding land stewards in the cattle industry. The regional winners will compete for the national award, which will be presented during NCBA’s Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., April 24-27, 2023. 

Sustainability began as a lifestyle more than a practice seven generations ago in the mid-1820s when the farm was established. Management decisions are made with the future in mind, with a forage-based feeding program through rotational grazing a priority. Rotational grazing has been vital to improving the overall health of the farm ecosystem, soil health, forage base, watershed, livestock and wildlife. Through conservation incentives offered under the Watershed Project and Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), the Carters installed 2,000 feet of water lines to two new water troughs, protected 1,250 square feet of heavy use areas and built 1,300 feet of fence to exclude cattle from Pintlala Creek. These efforts help the Carters utilize the land in the most effective way for their cow herd while protecting natural resources. In addition, being good stewards doesn’t stop at the farm gate, as both Will and Monnie Carter are veterinarians who care for other animals in their community. “We are in the cattle business, but we are in the grass business first,” said Dr. Will Carter of Carter Cattle Company. “Our job is to manage the grass and allocate it to the cattle that then take the resource and produce something of greater value.” Learn more about the Carters with this video.

The ACA Winter Board of Directors Meeting was held at the ACA Convention & Trade Show on Friday, February 17. We awarded a host of Top Hand Club prizes and drew for the Priefert Squeeze Chute. CONGRATULATIONS TO BUTLER COUNTY CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION for taking home the grand prize, sponsored by Fuller Supply and Priefert Ranch Equipment. Congratulations are also in order for Mark Matthews of Elmore County, who was our 2022 Top Recruiter— recruiting 50 new members!! For this, Mark took home a check for $500 and 10 panels, sponsored also by Fuller Supply and Priefert Ranch Equipment. Geneva County Cattlemen’s Association was awarded the Priefert head gate for having the largest percentage membership increase in one year. We appreciate the grassroots efforts that went to work in 2022, and we look forward to awarding Top Hand Club again for 2023!

COUNTY MEETINGS UNDERWAY

LIPSCOMB REAPPOINTED TO BEEF BOARD

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the appointment of 40 members to serve on the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, including Bill Lipscomb of Prattville for Alabama. Thirty-nine members will serve three-year terms and one member will serve a one-year term. The term of board members appointed to three-year terms start February 2023 and end February 2026.

The board is authorized by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 and is composed of 101 members representing 34 States and 5 units. Members must be beef producers or importers of beef and beef products nominated by certified producer organizations. Lipscomb has previously served on the Executive Committee for the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and will continue that role in 2023.

Alabama Beef Checkoff announces 2023 beef Influencers

Throughout February, we had the opportunity to unveil our three contracted Alabama Beef Influencers for 2023! They are: April Clayton, Muscle Shoals; Kathy Phillips, Dothan; and Ricky Albright, Troy. These three will partner up with the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program to promote beef in various ways on their social media platforms and at in-person events! Keep reading to learn a little more about each.

Kathy Adams Phillips of Kathy’s Southern Kitchen is a Dothan native and granddaughter to J.L. Adams— the man who helped put into motion the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program decades ago. Her family has farmed and raised cattle in the Wiregrass regional for generations, and her love of cooking came straight form her mother and grandmothers’ kitchens— where she claims to have learned to make anything from a buttermilk biscuit to a beef Wellington.

As a busy mother of four, Muscle Shoals native April Clayton knew the struggle to find the time to plan and prepare meals for her family. She dreamed of starting a business that would provide families with home-cooked meals, and when she was asked to make meals to sell, she jumped at the opportunity. What started as a take-home meal service quickly grew into event catering, and in February 2017, April and her business partner and husband, Kyle, opened Southern Skillet Catering in their hometown. Most recently, April competed on Season 2 of hit show, Next Level Chef. She describes it as “the experience of a lifetime.” Beef is April’s ingredient of choice, and she wants to share new ways to bring it to the family table. Troy native Ricky Albright has mastered the art of making mouthwatering food and social media reels. A first-generation cattleman, the self-taught grillmaster and award-winning BBQ champion has a great love for all things barbecue. His go-to style is open-fire cooking because he loves how it brings friends and family together in fellowship. His cooking journey began when he was a child watching his father grill on the Big Green Egg. Ricky has a deep appreciation for farmers and knows firsthand the hard work and labor that goes into growing produce and raising cattle. A lover of all meats, at the end of the day he says, “Beef. County Spotlights

More than 300 sixth graders from five different Geneva County schools attended a cattle class on Tuesday— hosted by the Geneva County Cattlemen’s Association — and learned about cattle production, by-products of cattle, and the different career opportunities in the beef industry. Students also received lessons on tagging, sustainability, cattle breeds, and vital skills needed in the industry. Learn more about the event here.

Elmore County Cattlemen hosted a steak sandwich sale on Saturday, February 4 to benefit the Elmore County Disaster Relief Fund, which has been assisting victims of the recent tornadoes. The organization raised more $15,000 for the local fund. We are so proud of the charitable work Elmore County Cattlemen’s has done in its community!

YOUNG CATTLEMEN’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM, APPS OUT NOW!

Young Cattlemen’s Leadership Program (YCLP) Class X applications are now available online and will close March 15. The YCLP is funded by the Alabama Beef Checkoff and serves to develop young leaders in the state cattle industry. There will be six (6) YCLP sessions for a select group of young cattlemen between the ages of 22 and 40 looking to take on more leadership and responsibility within the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and its county affiliates. Participants will network with other young cattlemen, tour diverse cattle operations, and develop advocacy and leadership skills as it relates to beef cattle production— all while learning more about the industry we represent. Applications and additional program details can be found at www.BamaBeef.org/YCLP, or by contacting YCLP Coordinator Reid McGuire at 334-265-1867.

UPCOMING JUNIOR CATTLEMEN EVENTS

Registration is open for the 8th Annual Southeastern Livestock Exposition Youth & Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest on Wednesday, March 8 in Montgomery, AL. Interested teams can learn more and register online at www.SLERodeo.com/JudgingContest.

We also invite junior cattlemen from across the state to mark their calendars for our 2023 Spring Youth Field Day. The FREE educational event is sponsored by the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program and will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at Stockdale Farms in Munford, AL. Activities will include a farm tour, live cattle grading, weed identification and control, temporary fencing and more! Be on the lookout for registration, beginning in March!

2023 ALABAMA JUNIOR & SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BEEF COOK-OFF 

The Alabama Junior & Senior High School Beef Cook-off is in the works! The 2023 state contest will take place on April 14, 2023 at Jefferson State University in Birminham, AL. In order to qualify for the state competition, contestants must have won a county competition. Registration for the statewide cook-off closes Monday, March 20. LMA Scholarship Opportunity

The Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) is pleased to announce the release of a new scholarship program. With the goal of investing in the next generation, the program is designed to award five (5), $2500 scholarships to individuals that are interested in or display knowledge of the importance of the agriculture industry and its supporting entities, with plans to use their career to advocate for or advance the livestock marketing industry. 

Applicants must be a graduating high school senior and/or currently enrolled at an accredited, postsecondary institution and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. A letter of recommendation from an active LMA member must accompany the application at the time of submission. LMA members may not recommend more than two (2) applicants for the LMA scholarship in the same academic year. 

Applications will remain open until March 31, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. Following the deadline, scholarship applications will be reviewed by a panel of LMA leadership, LMA membership and allied-industry relations.  For more information on the LMA Scholarship Program, visit https://lmaweb.vercel.app/About/scholarships.

NCBA DC OFFICE SEEKING FALL 2023 INTERNS

NCBA is seeking public policy interns for the fall 2023 semester. This internship program is conducted in conjunction with the Public Lands Council (PLC) and offers interns an opportunity to support the advocacy work of NCBA and PLC in Washington, D.C. Successful applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be available for the duration of the internship (September 2023 – December 2023) in Washington, D.C., and have excellent research, writing, and communication skills. Tornado Clean Up Day on Friday, January 27

ACA staff, leaders and members will be in West Alabama on Friday, January 27 to help members with cleanup from tornados earlier this month. The generosity of our members will allow us to bring along skid steers, chain saws and fencing supplies to visit Hale and Sumter counties. Inauguration Day 2023

Cattlemen leaders enjoyed time spent participating in Inauguration Day festivities on Monday, January 16 in downtown Montgomery. After the swearing in ceremony for constitutional officers, ACA officers and staff attended several elected officials’ receptions and enjoyed the Inauguration Parade— which featured the beef truck and trailer! The ACA congratulates elected officials and looks forward to working together to protect the business climate of Alabama’s beef cattle industry over the next four years.

2023 Distinguished Young Women of Alabama Visit ACA

The ACA welcomed the 2023 competitors of the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program to the ACA building earlier this month. Each year, the girls spend time at the building touring The MOOseum and learning more about the association. This year, we were proud to have US Sen. Katie Britt in attendance as she serves as a host mom for competitors. 2023 SLE Rodeo- Coming to Town March 17-19

Director of Rodeo Programs Sarah Hunter has been hot on the road in January. She traveled to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo to take notes and visit with the FWSSR leadership and PRCA staff, and she has traveled to county cattlemen’s meetings to promote the upcoming SLE Rodeo. 

The SLE Rodeo office has stayed busy preparing for several different events. The Southeastern Livestock Exposition hosted a New Member Orientation Luncheon at the rodeo headquarters to welcome a strong group of agricultural leaders into the organization. The organization is only five spots away from maxing out its membership— which caps at 150— and that is very exciting! The SLE Rodeo committee has been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming Livestock and Rodeo Week in March and are eager to welcome back 8X Stock Contractor of the Year Frontier Rodeo Company, 2022 PRCA Clown of the Year John Harrison, and the electric Ultimate Bullfighters! New this year will be a concert on the dirt featuring Shackelford Lane following the rodeo on Friday, March 17.

Congratulations, Mrs. Ali Gotcher!

This weekend was a treat for staff as we all got to head to Florence to witness ACA Director of Education and Outreach Ali Cantrell get married to Colbert County Cattleman and YCLP Council Member Will Gotcher. The two have been together nearly two years, and this weekend we enjoyed a beautiful wedding ceremony to celebrate their nuptials! Ali is now Ali Gotcher, and her email moving forward is agotcher@bamabeef.org. She will be remaining on staff with the ACA as a remote employee in Muscle Shoals, where the couple now reside.

ACA Hosts Region II

This week, the ACA hosted NCBA Region II Southeastern States at the building for an organizational meeting for staff and leadership. The group discussed state legislation, national legislation, state promotional projects and other topics pertinent to cattlemen’s associations. State in attendance included: Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. South Carolina & Louisiana could not attend. The group met with NCBA staffers Ethan Lane for policy updates and Jennifer Nealson to get updates on beef checkoff programming via ZOOM.

Sale Season

This week ACA Director of Field Services Reid McGuire was in attendance for the Fall Beef Cattle Improvement Association Bull Sale was held in Uniontown. Election Results

The Alabama BEEF PAC sends congratulations to many elected officials who were successful in yesterdays election. Notably, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate, Governor Kay Ivey, Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth, Attorney General Steve Marshall, Secretary of State Wes Allen, Treasurer Young Boozer and State Auditor Andrew Sorrell. The ACA also looks forward to working with newly elected US Senator Katie Britt and US Congressman Dale Strong. In the state legislature, there will be over 25% new faces serving Alabamians when they convene in March. For more election night results, visit here.

A Day in Auburn

ACA Executive Vice President Erin Beasley attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries Pesticide Residue and State Chemical Lab. The event was well attended including Commissioner Pate, Governor Ivey, Auburn University President Roberts and local elected officials. The Pesticide Residue Laboratory’s primary function is to protect the public health, by monitoring agricultural commodities for the presence of harmful pesticide residues and protect the environment. The lab provides an independent source of data and analytical expertise to expand the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) testing capacity.

Erin also attended the AU College of Agriculture Hall of Honor luncheon for the families of inductees that will be honored in February at a banquet. ACA Past President, Billy Maples, represents the Production Agriculture sector this year for the awards and gave remarks to those in attendance.

SOUTHEASTERN LIVESTOCK EXPO NEWS

The Southeastern Livestock Exposition is excited to announce all things new to 2023! It is our mission to impact and support youth in agriculture, and we are thrilled to extend our reach. Not only are we hosting the Junior Beef and Swine Expos, but we are adding the Junior Dairy Expo to the line up in 2023. We are also inviting three state youth rodeo associations to compete at the Garrett Coliseum the weekend before the SLE Rodeo: Alabama Junior Rodeo Association (3/10/23), Alabama Little Britches Rodeo Association (3/11/23), and Alabama High School Rodeo Association (3/12/23). This event will be known as the SLE Youth Rodeo Showdown. It is our hope that these young cowboys and cowgirls will one day come back and compete in the SLE Rodeo once they earn their PRCA cards! Moreover, the SLE leadership has decided it is time to bring some elegance back to the arena, so we are hosting the Miss SLE Rodeo pageant on March 9, 2023. Last but not least, we are ecstatic to announce that John Harrison is our 2023 SLE Rodeo clown, barrrelman, and featured act!  He is sure to keep you laughing while you sit back and enjoy some good ‘ole clean, family friendly fun! The Alabama Cattlemen’s Foundation would like to thank everyone who submitted scholarship applications this fall. We are THRILLED to have received more than 200 applications for 21 different scholarships in 2022. We look forward to carefully evaluating each applicant to find the perfect scholarship to fit his/her academic, scholastic or involvement needs! Sale Season Update

This week ACA Director of Field Services Reid McGuire attended the Frank Turner and Sons Farms Annual Bull Sale. It was a strong offering of Angus and Charolais bulls and continued the strong momentum of this sale season. While Reid hit the sale in Hayneville on Friday, Erin dropped in at the Fall Sale in Letohatchee on Saturday. We look forward to seeing you at the BCIA Fall Roundup in Uniontown this Friday!

Region II Set to Gather in Montgomery

Next week, the ACA will host NCBA Region II Southeastern States at the building for an organizational meeting for staff and leadership. The group will have a chance to discuss state legislation, national legislation, state promotional projects and other topics pertinent to cattlemen’s associations.

The results are in and our Cattlemen of Beef Month Award goes to…CLAY COUNTY CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION! They hosted 7 steak sandwich sales, were part of at least 3 big Beef Month events, were featured in a radio interview to promote Beef Month, read to 41 elementary school classrooms, were part of 3 local festivals, hosted a beef cook-off, and had 14 social media posts throughout the entire October Beef Month! This garnered them 90 points for their efforts and gave them the bragging rights of being declared The 2022 Cattlemen of Beef Month. Congrats!

However, they had some stiff competition among 25 counties who participated. And we appreciate every county that put their best foot forward this month to promote our delicious product, BEEF! Below is the list of the top 5 counties that participated and the entire list of counties that had a hand in making this the best Beef Month yet.

Bama’s Best Beef Announced

In a narrow, but firm, margin, the winner of the 2022 Bama’s Best Beef contest is…McLin’s Restaurant of Daleville, AL! The third-generation, family-owned-and-operated eatery won both the People’s Choice and Judge’s Pick divisions, making them the overall contest winner.

A 12-oz. Certified Angus Beef® ribeye aged 45 days and seasoned with a secret blend of 16 ingredients that only owner Ricky McLin knows, the McLin’s Special Ribeye has garnered the attention (and appetites) of more than 410,000 fans on Facebook.

“I run the front of house,” said manager Matt McLin. “I’m the one that sees the face, and it’s my job to learn people. I’ve probably seen three-or-four dozen new families in the past two weeks that I know have never dined with us. They said they had seen us on Facebook and wanted to try the steak.”

McLin’s Restaurant owner, Ricky McLin, and managers, Matt McLin and Zach McLin, were visited by ACA staff, officers and judges on Wednesday, Oct. 26 where the dish was judged and a finalist plaque was presented. As a result of the win, McLin’s Restaurant will also receive additional Facebook advertising, airtime on The Land Show to share their restaurant’s story, roadside signage and coverage in the Alabama Cattleman magazine. Their opponent, Boondocks BBQ & Creamery in Wedowee will also receive coverage as the state runner-up for its Brisket Plate, which also gets two thumbs up from staff and judges!

The annual Bama’s Best Beef contest, which highlights local restaurants’ beef dishes, is sponsored by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association (ACA) and funded by the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program.

Industry Relations & YCLP

The first weekend of this month ACA Director of Field Services Reid McGuire was on hand for the beef cattle show at the Alabama National Fair. Exhibitors from across the state exhibited their projects and fair attendees got to see first hand all of the hard work of our youth. This was great exposure for our state’s beef industry to the public.

We also had our third YCLP session in DeKalb County. Special thanks to Zane Troxell, D&S Quality Meats, and John and Randa Starnes of Tennessee River Music for hosting us for tours. Also, a huge thanks to the Northeast Alabama Agribusiness Center for the use of their facility for our Friday night meal and leadership session. We heard from Kathy Gotcher of the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee, as well as YCLP Council members Will Gotcher and Katie Sowell. Thanks to the DeKalb County Cattlemen’s Association for sponsoring a delicious steak dinner!

At the end of October, Reid was also in attendance for the annual bull sales at CK Cattle and Tennessee River Music. Both sales were excellent offerings that yielded strong results, and we are optimistic that the momentum will continue through the remainder of the sale season!

BEEF 101

On Friday, ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell will host her last Beef 101 for the year for culinary students from Jefferson State Community College and for the Maranathan Academy Family and Consumer Science program. There will be a total of 35 students in attendance. This program has hosted over 400 students, foodservice employees, producers, and consumers in this year alone! We have hosted 10 Beef 101 programs throughout 2022 with an average of 42 participants or more at each session. Please contact Ali if you would like to be a part of a Beef 101 program in the future or if you would like to schedule a Beef 101 in 2023.

YCLP COUNCIL Industry Trip

This past weekend, the YCLP Council, along with staffers Reid McGuire and Erin Beasley and ACA President Jim Jordan, took its annual industry trip to Nebraska. The tour stops included the University of Nebraska Research and Extension Center, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Neogen, the Nebraska State Capitol, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Chief Ethanol Plant, Mead Cattle Co., as well as a meal at the home of past Nebraska Cattlemen’s President Mike Drinnin.

This was an outstanding experience for council members David Daniel, Katie Sowell, Will Bullen, Will Gotcher and Ryan Kennedy. Wish us safe travels!

Southeastern Livestock Expo News

The SLE Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner will be held Thursday afternoon at the Cattlemen’s building. Members will participate in elections for a new vice president, treasurer and three open board seats. A preview of the 2023 SLE Rodeo will also be reported as work is underway for another successful event.

Firing Up Beef Month Promotions

On Tuesday, ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell traveled to Mobile to help kick off MobTown Burger Week. This event was hosted for all the restaurants participating in the competition that will take place October 1-8. Local restaurants in Mobile have entered a specific burger into the competition that people can vote for to determine a People’s Choice winner, and they will also determine a highest sales award winner as well. Restore Mobile is hosting this competition, and the beef checkoff is excited to partner with this organization for October Beef Month.

Today, Ali is filming a porterhouse steak recipe on Talk of the Valley for WHNT in Huntsville. This segment will air during October Beef Month to promote beefitswhatsfordinner.com.

This Saturday, Beef Month officially kick off at Talladega Superspeedway where ACA staff, ACA President Jim Jordan, Clay and Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Associations will be serving steak sandwiches to the media center. If you are attending the race this weekend, be on the lookout for our Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner grandstand banner in the stadium and listen for radio ads that will celebrate Beef Month!

OCTOBER BEEF MONTH RUNDOWN

Speaking of Beef Month, here’ s all you need to know about the 50+ year tradition of month-long promotions!

This October Beef Month, we have a friendly competition in store for our County Chapters. The ACA wants to see which of our counties in Alabama can celebrate Beef Month the best, so get your planning mode activated and your volunteers in place for our search for the best County Cattlemen’s Association of Beef Month! Every event that your chapter participates in within the local community will count as points towards the competition. The county with the most points by November 1, 2022 will be declared the Cattlemen of Beef Month.

Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission

This morning, ACA participated in the quarterly board meeting for the Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission. ACA holds a seat on this board which serves as a program to fill gaps in conservation programs within the state such as cross fencing, feral hog control, water quality projects and pasture improvements. Tomorrow, we will also participate in the NRCS State Technical meeting.

Beef Checkoff Task Force Meeting- You’re Invited!

Invitations to participate in the Beef Checkoff Task Force meeting are going out this week. At this meeting attendees from the beef cattle industry will work to develop ideas and programs for FY23 utilizing beef checkoff dollars. Any cattlemen is welcome to attend but we do need to know you are coming so we can make sure to have enough lunch. The meeting will take place at 10:00AM at the Cattlemen’s building on October 27^th. This is the best way to have a direct voice in how beef checkoff dollars are spent in the upcoming year. Hurricane Ian

The MOOseum has seen increased traffic from Hurricane Ian evacuees. Although the circumstances that bring them to town are less than desirable, we are proud these families found their way through our doors, and we welcome them with open arms. One family that visited stated that the father works at a museum in Tampa, and he was impressed with our space!

Please join us as we pray for the safety of our Florida neighbors and their herds, pastures and fields. The Pike County Cattlemen’s Association is serving as an evacuee safe place to stall animals. APPLY FOR NCBA CONVENTION INTERNSHIP

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering collegestudents a unique behind-the-scenes experience through its annual convention internship program. The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the largest annual meeting of the U.S. beef cattle industry, will take place Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Up to 18 interns will be selected and will be responsible for setting up the demonstration arena, assisting at committee meetings and Cattlemen’s College, participating in the NCBA booth, and posting on social media. NCBA will strive to provide students time to maximize industry networking.

Student interns must be able to work Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2023, provide their own transportation to New Orleans, and be at least a junior-level college student at an accredited university at the time of the event. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably have a background in, or working knowledge of, the cattle and/or beef industry, and have experience with social media.

Interested students must complete an online Student Internship Application and submit college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a resume. The application deadline is Oct. 21, 2022. For more information, contact Grace Webb at gwebb@beef.org.

BEEF 101 in Washington County

ACA Director of Education and Outreach Ali Cantrell spoke to Washington County High School about Beef 101 and the beef cookoff today. Washington County has won the Alabama Jr. & Sr. High School Beef Cookoff multiple times with their past teacher, Janis Price. They now have a new teacher named Mrs. Behlen that wants to continue the tradition of teaching her students about the beef industry as well as participate in the beef cookoff.

Fall Youth Field Day Success

One week ago today we held our Fall Junior Field Day at CK Cattle in Hope Hull. We had a great turnout of around 60 youth who got BQA certified, learned about bull selection and development, herd health, calving, and much more. A special thanks to CK Cattle for hosting and sponsoring our meal and to our many speakers who spent the day with us!

BEEF at Ag Roundup

ACA staffer Ali Cantrell will host a tailgate at Ag Roundup this Saturday prior to the Auburn V. Missouri Homecoming game. She and the Collegiate Cattlemen’s Association will be serving brisket samples and giving out beef swag. Come by and see them if you’re gonna be on the Plains!

YCLP Council Heads to America’s Heartland

This week the YCLP Council will be on our industry trip to Nebraska. We have a great trip lined out full of educational and fun tours that will expose our council members to different parts of the beef industry that are not as common in the Southeast. Council members will have the opportunity to see the University of Nebraska-Lincoln cattle research farm, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Neogen Corporate office, US Meat Animal Research Center, Mead Cattle Company, Chief Ethanol Plant and Drinnin Cattle Company.

Beef Month is a time-honored tradition here in Alabama, and as a grassroots organization, we love to see Cattlemen’s Associations get creative in their celebrations. This October Beef Month, we have a friendly competition in store for our County Chapters. The ACA wants to see which of our counties in Alabama can celebrate Beef Month the best, so get your planning mode activated and your volunteers in place for our search for the best County Cattlemen’s Association of Beef Month!

Every event that your chapter participates in within the local community will count as points towards the competition. The county with the most points by November 1, 2022 will be declared the Cattlemen of Beef Month.

Here’s dates to keep in mind for the month-long celebration:

• September 26 – October 31: Bama’s Best Beef Competition
• October 2: BEEF at Talladega Superspeedway
• October 1 – 8: Mobtown Burger Week
• October 2 – 7: Beef Week in Alabama

The Producer Education tab has been updated recently with Beef Systems Short Courses and Alabama Grazing Academy information, as well as the Cattlemen’s Activities. As we get closer to fall, all of the tabs (especially the sales!) will start to fill up, so check it daily to make sure you don’t miss an event near you!

SLE NEWS 

The Southeastern Livestock Exposition is steadily preparing for the 2023 PRCA rodeo in Montgomery! If you or your business would like to support the mission of the SLE through sponsorship, please reach out to Sarah Hunter by emailing shunter@bamabeef.org. The annual SLE Membership Meeting will take place on September 29 where exciting announcements will be made about the 2023 SLE Rodeo and new officers and board members will be elected to serve!

APPLY FOR NCBA CONVENTION INTERNSHIP

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering collegestudents a unique behind-the-scenes experience through its annual convention internship program. The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the largest annual meeting of the U.S. beef cattle industry, will take place Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Up to 18 interns will be selected and will be responsible for setting up the demonstration arena, assisting at committee meetings and Cattlemen’s College, participating in the NCBA booth, and posting on social media. NCBA will strive to provide students time to maximize industry networking.

Student interns must be able to work Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2023, provide their own transportation to New Orleans, and be at least a junior-level college student at an accredited university at the time of the event. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably have a background in, or working knowledge of, the cattle and/or beef industry, and have experience with social media.

Interested students must complete an online Student Internship Application and submit college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a resume. The application deadline is Oct. 21, 2022. For more information, contact Grace Webb at gwebb@beef.org.

Youth have gathered to spend the day discussing bull selection, bull development, understanding EPD’s, cool season forages and more. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering a variety of scholarships and grants to help producers attend CattleCon23, which will be held Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans. 

Scholarship recipients receive a complimentary Education Package registration and discounted housing accommodations for three nights, Feb. 1-3, 2023. Scholarships will be awarded to up to five beef cattle industry members, up to three young beef producers, and up to three students (currently enrolled in classes) in the industry.Applications for all scholarship categories are due by Sept. 23, 2022, and will be evaluated based on eligibility and answers to application questions.

In addition to the scholarship program, NCBA also offers the Rancher Resilience Grant, which is designed to support cattle producer attendance at impactful education events, such as Cattlemen’s College held prior to convention. Administered by NCBA, the grant is made possible by a partnership between the National Cattlemen’s Foundation and Cargill Protein. To apply for a grant to cover registration costs and two nights hotel, visit  www.ncba.org/producers/rancher-resilience-grant. Cattlemen’s College will be an event option once convention registration opens in October.

We would like to welcome Cynthia Jancaterino to the Alabama Cattlemen’s staff team! Cynthia joins us as The MOOseum Coordinator with many years of experience in tourism and an affinity for the beef industry. A Montgomery native who has lived here all of her life, Cynthia has two grown children— daughter, Chava, and son, Benjamin. “I may be new to the ACA but not to beef,” she said. “One of my most cherished childhood memories is of being with my dad, grilling steak on Saturday nights. My son is now the grill master, and steak is still a meal I look forward to! I am truly excited to learn more about the ACA and the people who make it great!”

In addition to managing The MOOseum operations, Cynthia will also be the friendly voice you hear when you call the Cattlemen’s Association. Join us in welcoming Cynthia to Team ACA!

Montgomery Stockyard Hosts Last Weekly Sale

On Monday, August 22, Montgomery Stockyards hosted its last regular weekly sale. ACA staffers Erin Beasley, Reid McGuire and Kayla Greer enjoyed stopping by the market that’s been operating since 1958. “We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our customers who have trusted us to market their cattle in our weekly sales,” market owner Jerry Etheredge said. “We would also like to say thank you to our buyers who helped make MSY a competitive market. We have been very fortunate to have some of the very best sit around the ring here over the years.”

While the Stockyard Cafe will remain open, Montgomery Stockyards will only operate board sales by video, through DVAuction, moving forward. Thank you, MSY, for more than 65 years of dedicated service to Alabama’s beef cattle industry.

BEEF 101 on Friday

This Friday, the Alabama Beef Checkoff Program will host a Beef 101 for 35 Ben E. Keith sales representatives at Auburn University. These sales reps will get a better picture of what branded beef programs are about and a detailed description of the pasture to plate story. Chambers County Cattleman Jim Collins will be coming to speak to them that morning about his operation before they move on to the meat lab to meet with AU Meat Lab Manager Barney Wilborn and Regional Extension Agent Dr. Alex Tigue.
