YCLP COUNCIL Industry Trip
This past weekend, the YCLP Council, along with staffers Reid McGuire and Erin Beasley and ACA President Jim Jordan, took its annual industry trip to Nebraska. The tour stops included the University of Nebraska Research and Extension Center, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Neogen, the Nebraska State Capitol, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Chief Ethanol Plant, Mead Cattle Co., as well as a meal at the home of past Nebraska Cattlemen’s President Mike Drinnin.
This was an outstanding experience for council members David Daniel, Katie Sowell, Will Bullen, Will Gotcher and Ryan Kennedy. Wish us safe travels!
Southeastern Livestock Expo News
The SLE Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner will be held Thursday afternoon at the Cattlemen’s building. Members will participate in elections for a new vice president, treasurer and three open board seats. A preview of the 2023 SLE Rodeo will also be reported as work is underway for another successful event.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Firing Up Beef Month Promotions
On Tuesday, ACA Director of Education & Outreach Ali Cantrell traveled to Mobile to help kick off MobTown Burger Week. This event was hosted for all the restaurants participating in the competition that will take place October 1-8. Local restaurants in Mobile have entered a specific burger into the competition that people can vote for to determine a People’s Choice winner, and they will also determine a highest sales award winner as well. Restore Mobile is hosting this competition, and the beef checkoff is excited to partner with this organization for October Beef Month.
Today, Ali is filming a porterhouse steak recipe on Talk of the Valley for WHNT in Huntsville. This segment will air during October Beef Month to promote beefitswhatsfordinner.com.
This Saturday, Beef Month officially kick off at Talladega Superspeedway where ACA staff, ACA President Jim Jordan, Clay and Montgomery County Cattlemen’s Associations will be serving steak sandwiches to the media center. If you are attending the race this weekend, be on the lookout for our Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner grandstand banner in the stadium and listen for radio ads that will celebrate Beef Month!
OCTOBER BEEF MONTH RUNDOWN
Speaking of Beef Month, here’ s all you need to know about the 50+ year tradition of month-long promotions!
This October Beef Month, we have a friendly competition in store for our County Chapters. The ACA wants to see which of our counties in Alabama can celebrate Beef Month the best, so get your planning mode activated and your volunteers in place for our search for the best County Cattlemen’s Association of Beef Month! Every event that your chapter participates in within the local community will count as points towards the competition. The county with the most points by November 1, 2022 will be declared the Cattlemen of Beef Month.
Here’s dates to keep in mind for the month-long celebration:
- September 26 – October 31: Bama’s Best Beef Competition
- October 2: BEEF at Talladega Superspeedway
- October 1 – 8: Mobtown Burger Week
- October 2 – 7: Beef Week in Alabama
- October 3: $5 off the “Holy Cow Burger” at Bill E’s in Fairhope, AL
- October 4: Promote MobTown Burger Week
- October 5: Free Appetizer with the purchase of the Brisket Plate at Bow & Arrow in Auburn
- October 6: $2 off the “Zach’s Tot Roast” at West End Grill in Huntsville

Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission
This morning, ACA participated in the quarterly board meeting for the Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission. ACA holds a seat on this board which serves as a program to fill gaps in conservation programs within the state such as cross fencing, feral hog control, water quality projects and pasture improvements. Tomorrow, we will also participate in the NRCS State Technical meeting.
Beef Checkoff Task Force Meeting- You’re Invited!
Invitations to participate in the Beef Checkoff Task Force meeting are going out this week. At this meeting attendees from the beef cattle industry will work to develop ideas and programs for FY23 utilizing beef checkoff dollars. Any cattlemen is welcome to attend but we do need to know you are coming so we can make sure to have enough lunch. The meeting will take place at 10:00AM at the Cattlemen’s building on October 27th. This is the best way to have a direct voice in how beef checkoff dollars are spent in the upcoming year. Hurricane Ian
The MOOseum has seen increased traffic from Hurricane Ian evacuees. Although the circumstances that bring them to town are less than desirable, we are proud these families found their way through our doors, and we welcome them with open arms. One family that visited stated that the father works at a museum in Tampa, and he was impressed with our space!
Please join us as we pray for the safety of our Florida neighbors and their herds, pastures and fields. The Pike County Cattlemen’s Association is serving as an evacuee safe place to stall animals. APPLY FOR NCBA CONVENTION INTERNSHIP
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is offering collegestudents a unique behind-the-scenes experience through its annual convention internship program. The 2023 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show, the largest annual meeting of the U.S. beef cattle industry, will take place Feb. 1-3, 2023, in New Orleans.
Up to 18 interns will be selected and will be responsible for setting up the demonstration arena, assisting at committee meetings and Cattlemen’s College, participating in the NCBA booth, and posting on social media. NCBA will strive to provide students time to maximize industry networking.
Student interns must be able to work Jan. 29 – Feb. 4, 2023, provide their own transportation to New Orleans, and be at least a junior-level college student at an accredited university at the time of the event. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, preferably have a background in, or working knowledge of, the cattle and/or beef industry, and have experience with social media.
Interested students must complete an online Student Internship Application and submit college transcripts, two letters of recommendation and a resume. The application deadline is Oct. 21, 2022. For more information, contact Grace Webb at gwebb@beef.org.
